Dry Fly Fishing in Wild Lapland Rivers

A private, all-inclusive fly fishing and rafting expedition through the wilderness of Lapland. Imagine following a remote northern river for five days, drifting between promising pools, searching for rising grayling and camping beside the water.

Each day brings new water to explore, but there’s no rush to keep moving. When we find exceptional fishing, we stay and make the most of it. Your guide takes care of the rafting, equipment, meals and camp – you concentrate on the fishing.

Follow the river. Find the fish. Enjoy the wilderness.

The Art of Dry-Fly Fishing for Wild Grayling

There’s something special about watching a large grayling rise slowly through clear water to take a dry fly. Their willingness to feed on the surface, their beautiful dorsal fins and their sometimes surprisingly selective behaviour make grayling a rewarding fish to chase.

Dry flies are our preferred method, and much of the expedition is spent looking for rising fish. When conditions change, we can fish nymphs or streamers too. The dream is a truly exceptional grayling on a dry fly – that’s exactly the opportunity we are looking for. Nothing is guaranteed with wild fish; the next rise could be the one.

A River Adventure at Your Own Pace

Some of the best fishing is far from the easy access points. On the Grayling Adventure the raft becomes part of the fishing: instead of returning to the same stretch every day, we travel downstream, exploring new pools, runs and quiet sections.

We stop wherever the water looks interesting – to fish from the bank, wade or fish from the raft. Paddle if you like, or just enjoy the ride: your guide is a trained river rafting captain and handles the route and safety.

The raft takes us further. The fishing decides where we stop.

Five Days on the River

A typical day starts with morning coffee and a few hours of dry-fly fishing before we pack the raft and continue downstream. When we find good water, we take our time and watch for the fish to start rising in the slow pools – sometimes that means a whole day around the same camp.

The aim isn’t to travel as far as possible. It’s to explore the river, find wild grayling and enjoy the freedom of a real wilderness expedition.

Living by the River

We spend the nights in wilderness tent camps along the river; depending on the itinerary, the first or last night may be in a guest room. After a day of fishing and rafting we cook a good meal, sit by the campfire and enjoy the quiet of the river.

All camping equipment, accommodation and meals are included. The real luxury is waking up beside the river with another day of fishing ahead.

Private Guiding. A Personal Adventure.

The Grayling Adventure is a private expedition for two to four anglers with one dedicated guide – and this one runs on my home river. Fly fishing is the focus, but spinning is welcome too. No rafting experience is needed; you choose how much you want to paddle.

You should be comfortable spending long days outdoors and ready for changing northern weather.

“I can’t promise the grayling of your lifetime, but I’ll do my best to help you find it.” – Teemu

Grayling Adventure Questions

Is the Grayling Adventure mainly a fly-fishing trip?

Yes. It’s designed for fly fishers who love wild grayling, with dry flies as the main focus. Nymphs, streamers and spinning are welcome too.

Do I need previous rafting experience?

No. Your guide is a certified river rafting captain and handles the rafting and safety. Help with the paddling if you like.

Will we fish from the raft or wade?

The raft is mainly a way to reach different stretches. We stop at promising spots to fish from the bank or wade, and sometimes fish from the raft to reach water far from the banks.

Do we move to a new campsite every day?

Probably not. When we find excellent water, we may stay two nights at the same camp and explore the river around it.

Do I need to bring fishing or camping equipment?

No. All fishing, rafting and camping gear is included, along with licences, meals, accommodation and transport from Kittilä Airport.
