Frozen Lakes Expedition – Wilderness Ice Fishing in Lapland
Some People Go South for the Winter. Some Don’t.
Personally guided by Teemu Vehviläinen, founder of Grayling Guide.

Into the Frozen Lapland Wilderness
A private ice fishing expedition in Kilpisjärvi, Northern Lapland, in March and April. Imagine travelling across snow-covered fells under the bright spring sun towards a remote lake where wild fish wait beneath the ice.
For several days we explore the mountain lakes of the Kilpisjärvi and Käsivarsi wilderness by snowmobile and sledge, fishing for arctic char, grayling and whitefish – and when conditions allow, you can watch the fish take your lure.

Ice Fishing for Arctic Char, Grayling and Whitefish
- Arctic char – beautiful, colourful and one of the most exciting fish in remote mountain lakes.
- Grayling – a familiar favourite, offering a completely different challenge beneath the ice.
- Whitefish – often needs a delicate presentation and careful technique, especially when sight fishing.
We choose the lakes by the conditions and your interests, so you get to fish different waters during the expedition.

Sight Fishing – Watch the Take
In shallow, clear lakes you can lie down, look through the ice hole and watch the fish approach your lure. We can also use underwater cameras to see what’s happening.
Seeing an arctic char appear beneath the ice, hesitate and suddenly take is unforgettable – and a great way to learn how fish react. Visibility depends on the conditions, so sight fishing can’t be guaranteed, but we look for it whenever we can.

Snowmobile Adventures to Remote Lakes
Reaching the water is part of the adventure. We travel by snowmobile and sledge across frozen lakes and spectacular Arctic scenery – 30 minutes to an hour and a half to the lake, with a few stops to admire the view.
Each day can take us somewhere new, depending on the weather, the ice and the fish. No rigid schedule – we make the most of the fishing and enjoy the journey.

Arctic Spring – March and April
The days are longer, the sun is back and the snow-covered mountains make a beautiful setting for fishing. After a day outdoors we return to a comfortable cabin or hotel in Kilpisjärvi.
In March there are excellent chances to see the northern lights on clear evenings – Kilpisjärvi is famous for them, although sightings are never guaranteed.
