Beyond the Roads: Fishing by Helicopter

Some of the most rewarding fishing begins far beyond the reach of ordinary roads. Imagine flying over the fells and remote lakes and landing by a wilderness river where the only sounds are the wind, the water and the occasional rise of a fish.

For five days we fly in by helicopter or floatplane, set up camp close to the water and fish for wild grayling, brown trout and arctic char – with packrafts or float tubes to reach water you couldn’t fish from the shore. Dry flies are at the heart of it; nymphs, streamers and spinning are welcome too.

Your adventure begins where phones don’t work.

Wild Trout, Grayling and Arctic Char

The species depend on the destination and season. Tell me what you’d like to catch, and we decide where to land.

It’s not about numbers. It’s about extraordinary waters and making the most of every chance.

Fly Into the Wilderness

The journey in is part of what makes Heli Fishing special. Helicopter or floatplane transport is included, taking us to waters that would otherwise need long journeys on foot. The choice of aircraft depends on the destination, group size and practical arrangements.

Some destinations are known for trophy grayling; others for remote lakes with arctic char and brown trout. Note that landing isn’t allowed everywhere, to protect the arctic fox – at some destinations we hike a little, agreed in advance.

The aircraft takes us into the wilderness. The adventure begins when we land.

Explore Further with Packrafts and Float Tubes

Packrafts and float tubes let us fish water that is hard or impossible to reach from the shore. A float tube is a great way to approach rising fish on a quiet lake; a packraft lets us cover more water and move between spots.

All the equipment is included – you don’t need to bring your own watercraft or have used one before. Your guide shows you how, and watercraft use always depends on safe weather and water.

Your Five-Day Wilderness Expedition

This is not a lodge holiday but a true wilderness expedition. We set up camp close to the fishing and spend our days exploring the lakes, streams and rivers around it – maybe dry flies for rising grayling in the morning, a float tube on another lake in the afternoon and trout in the evening.

There’s no hotel to rush back to and no rigid timetable. Five days to concentrate on the fishing and enjoy being far from everyday life.

No Phones, No Worries

Wake up in your tent by a remote lake, have your morning coffee and watch the water for the first rises. There’s no rush – and usually no other people at all. Tents, sleeping gear, camping equipment and meals are included, and your guide handles the camp, cooking and logistics.

There’s no phone signal or social media out there, but your guide always carries a satellite messenger for emergencies.

Private Guiding. A Personal Expedition.

Heli Fishing is a private expedition for two to four anglers with one local fly fishing guide. It suits anglers who enjoy remote surroundings and several days away from roads. On grayling trips we fish dry flies only.

You don’t need to be an expert caster or a seasoned wilderness traveller, but you should enjoy long days outdoors, wilderness camping and some walking between spots. For me, reaching a remote lake by aircraft is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Lapland.

Heli Fishing Questions

What fish can we target?

Grayling and arctic char are the main species, and some destinations also hold brown trout. We plan the destination by your interests and the season.

What happens if the weather prevents flying?

Safety comes first. We discuss alternatives, and if the helicopter transfer can’t be provided, the cost of the unused transfer is refunded.

Do I need to bring fishing or camping equipment?

No. All fishing and camping gear and the packraft or float tube are included. Bring your own favourites if you prefer.

Is catching fish guaranteed?

No – but on a grayling trip you’d have to be really unlucky not to catch fish. The aim is rewarding fishing and an authentic wilderness experience.
