Ice Fishing in Finnish Lapland

The Fish Are Still Down There.

Experience Ice Fishing in the Arctic Wilderness

Imagine sitting on a frozen mountain lake, surrounded by snow-covered fells and bright Arctic spring sunshine. Somewhere beneath the ice, wild arctic char, grayling and whitefish are waiting.

We travel by snowmobile and sledge into remote mountain areas, far from roads and busy tourist spots, drill our holes and start searching for fish – lying on a mattress or reindeer hide and watching what happens under the ice. Experienced ice angler or first-timer, we plan the trip around your group.

The wilderness is frozen. The fishing adventure is just beginning.

Sight Fishing – Watch the Fish Take Your Lure

In shallow, clear water you can look through the ice hole and watch an arctic char approach your lure, hesitate for a moment – and take it. You see the whole thing before you even feel the fish on your rod.

Visibility depends on the lake, depth and conditions. When needed, we use sonar to find fish, and underwater cameras let you follow the action live on a screen.

What Fish Can You Catch?

The species depend on the destination, season and conditions.

The Best Time for Ice Fishing in Lapland

We concentrate on March and April. March still has a true winter atmosphere; April brings even more daylight and often pleasant days on the ice. Mountain weather changes fast and it can still be very cold, so we choose the destination by the weather, the ice and your interests. Safety always comes first.

What to Expect on the Ice

All trips are privately guided and tailored to your group. I take care of the equipment, transport and practical arrangements; you bring warm clothing and curiosity. No previous ice fishing experience is needed.

We offer day trips and longer adventures into remote mountain areas – on multi-day trips we always return to Kilpisjärvi for the night, in a cabin or hotel. Meals and winter clothing can be arranged, and you can also drive your own or a rental snowmobile to the fells.
