Your First Steps in Fly Fishing

Have you ever watched a fish rise to take an insect from the surface and wondered what it would be like to catch one on a fly? It might look complicated at first, but getting started is easier than you think.

Join me for a private lesson in Northern Finland. We’ll learn the basics in a relaxed atmosphere and put your new skills into practice on real fishing waters. You don’t need any experience or your own equipment – just curiosity and a willingness to try something new.

What You’ll Learn on the Water

The best way to learn fly fishing is to get out on the water. We start with casting and getting comfortable with the gear, then move on to fishing. Depending on your interests, we’ll cover:

  • How to use a fly rod, reel and line
  • Basic casting and line control
  • Choosing flies and presenting them naturally
  • Reading the river and finding promising spots
  • Dry-fly fishing and other useful techniques
  • Playing, landing and handling fish responsibly

There’s no pressure to learn everything in one day. And with a little luck, you’ll catch your first fish on a fly during the lesson.

Your Classroom Is the River

Northern Lapland is a wonderful place to discover fly fishing. We can arrange lessons near Muonio, Hetta or Kilpisjärvi, choosing the river or lake by your location and the conditions.

Grayling are particularly good fish to learn on – watching one rise to a dry fly is often the moment people fall in love with fly fishing. A catch is never guaranteed, but there’s always plenty to learn and enjoy.

A Patient Guide Who Loves Teaching

I’m Teemu Vehviläinen, founder of Grayling Guide. I’ve been fishing for more than 40 years and worked as a primary school teacher for 20 years.

Whether you’ve never held a fly rod or have tried casting without much success, I’ll help you improve in a relaxed, encouraging atmosphere. We all make mistakes – they’re part of learning. My aim is that you feel confident enough to carry on by yourself after the lesson.

Equipment and Experience

No need to buy expensive gear before your first lesson. I provide waders, rods, reels, lines, flies and everything else, chosen for your level and the type of fishing.

If you already have a fly rod, bring it along – we can make sure it suits your needs. Just remember comfortable outdoor clothing; I’ll advise you on anything else when we plan the lesson.
